Cups of nun chai

a participatory memorial

Cups of nun chai is a participatory memorial that emerged in response to the loss of life that took place in Indian occupied Kashmir during the Summer of 2010.

Like an ever-growing memory, Cups of nun chai unfolded over two years of tea and conversation into a gentle yet challenging refusal to allow this loss of life to simply pass...Upon a scaffolding of names, dates and places emanating from Kashmir, Cups of nun chai takes place through personal stories that connect Kashmir to countless other places and peoples around the world. Here it is personal experience and memory, with all its nuance and complications, which gives voice to history.

From June 2016 - March 2017 the daily newspaper Kashmir Reader will serialise Cups of nun chai in print and online every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Not long after this media intervention began the extrajudicial killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani set off a wave of violence in Kashmir not seen since 2010.
